The Country Porcupine was the twice-weekly edition of the daily Porcupine's Gazette, edited by William Cobbett. Prominent back page headline: "Irish Rebels" with long detailed 2 column news report on the trial of Irish rebel Myles Byrne for his part in the Irish Revolution of 1798 (see below). Nice display !! The Irish Rebellion of 1798 (Irish: Éirà Amach 1798), or 1798 rebellion as it is known locally, was an uprising in 1798, lasting several months, against the British dominated Kingdom of Ireland. The United Irishmen, a republican revolutionary group influenced by the ideas of the American and French Revolutions, were the main organising force behind the rebellion. The 1798 rebellion was probably the most concentrated outbreak of violence in Irish history and resulted in an estimated 15,000-30,000 deaths over the course of three months. Research into casualty figures suggests that a maximum of 2,000 troops and 1,000 civilians died at the hands of the rebels and that the remainder were killed by Government troops and loyalist militias. Atrocities were committed on both sides, the great majority being committed by the government forces but rebel killings of Protestants in Wexford were given much greater emphasis by the victors in the following years, as the loyalist version of events reduced the rebellion to a sectarian Catholic plot to massacre Protestants - a repeat of the Irish Rebellion of 1641. Myles Byrne (1780 – 1862) was a leader in the Irish Rebellion of 1798 and chef de bataillon in Napoleon’s Irish Legion. Byrne participated in preparations for the 1798 Rebellion, fought at Oulart, Enniscorthy, the Battle of Clough (or Battle of Tubberneering), the Battle of Arklow, the Battle of Vinegar Hill, Castlecomer and Ballygullen. He was aged only 18 years at the time. After the Wexford Rebellion was over, he joined Michael Dwyer and Joseph Holt in the Wicklow mountains, continuing to fight on. Next he settled in Dublin.
