Also signed by Justice of Peace Marshall MILLER. Asa Black built the 1792 store which was eventually purchased by Asa KNIGHT and removed to Sturbridge Village in MA to create the ASA KNIGHT STORE OLD STURBRIDGE VILLAGE PAPERS "The store which Knight purchased was built by Asa Black who owned the adjoining dwelling, probably as an investment, leasing both for periods of time, which has led to considerable confusion. As a result, the father of President Rutherford B. Hayes has been incorrectly associated with the Asa Knight store now at Old Sturbridge Village. The Hayes family rented the house later owned by Knight and the 1792 store which had been built first, a hundred yards across the common. This building had been torn down by the time Rutherford Birchard Hayes visited the home of his ancestors, the false story was circulated, and a correction and the town deeds had unpopular information and were ignored. Asa Black who owned both the house and store, but only rented the house to Hayes and his brother in law Birchard, had a series of tenants for the store. The tenants are not named in the public records, but when the store was being disassembled for removal to Sturbridge, a previously in-accessible door was found with the name Godfrey Crosby boldly painted across it. The history of Marlboro, Vermont says of Crosby, "he established himself as a merchant in Dummerston with flattering prospects of a successful business." He failed and "in embarrassed circumstances in December, 1815" moved his family to Marlboro. Black sold out to an enterprising partnership which was based in Brattleboro, the thriving commercial town immediately south of Dummerston. Francis and Joseph Goodhue and John R. Blake added the store to their investments in Connecticut River boats, wool carding, cotton spinning and distilling. " This is likely the Ebenezer MILLER b 1785 in Dummerston and brother of Marshall MILLER the JP. Both sons of Marshall MILLER (b circa 1754-1807). Nice old document. VG condtion.
