Rare and Original, 1848 Soldier’s Marriage Proposal Letter. This sentimental letter measures approx. 7 ¾†x 10†and is in very good condition. This letter is hand written from Fort Montgomery, Orange County, New York to the parents of the potential bride in West Stockbridge, Massachusetts. This letter is written by a Jim Z. Potter to Mr. & Mrs. S.B. Hatfield in which Mr. Potter acknowledges the mutual feelings he has for their daughter and wishes to ask their consent for her hand in marriage. There is no reference, seal, or stationary to prove he was an active soldier, but, since it was written from Fort Montgomery, we assume he is a military personnel of some sort. Mr. Potter is asking the consent of the parents for marriage to their daughter in a hand written and quite touching and polite letter. The letter is written on standard paper stock and is a bi-fold sheet which only contains written text on the front. The letter is dated June 20, 1848. The letter is in excellent condition and still retains its bold writing and is free of rips, tears or damage of any kind. It was written on lined paper and there was red ink used to underline certain phrases within the letter for emphasis. Although there is not much text to the letter, the content which is present is very touching, romantic and admirable from a soldier.
