This work was created "From the Original Painting by Stuart" for the outstanding HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA FROM THE EARLIEST PERIOD TO THE PRESENT TIME BY TALIAFERRO PRESTON SHAFFNER, LL.D. MEMBER OF THE BAR OF THE SUPREME COURT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA This is the outstanding Gilbert Stuart portrait of Washington, the one used on several postage stamps but different than the dollar bill. "Gilbert Stuart painted this celebrated "Lansdowne" portrait in his Germantown, Pennsylvania, studio in 1796. It was commissioned by William Bingham, United States senator from Pennsylvania, and his wife, for the Earl of Shelburne, later Marquis of Lansdowne, who had defended the rebellious colonies in Parliment." (The National Portrait Gallery) This is an impressive engraving that will frame very well. Nice size, the overall page is 7" by 10½" with margins as issued. Condition In very good shape, no stains or foxing. Minor wear for this item, nothing of real note, printed on heavy paper. A beautiful engraving, this is a must see/buy.
