Description

FIREMAN SERIES TRADE CARDS      Two wonderful Trade Cards from the Series Firemen handsomely framed and perfectly preserved.   Frame is 9 3/4" tall X 11 3/4" wide.         The first card states "A Fireman always sleeps with one foot out of bed, with his hand on his boots, and with both ears, and one eye open".  It shows a Fireman in bed doing this exact thing.      The second card states "Home from a hard fought fire, the cooling off process".  It shows a Fireman with his frothy beer.      Both cards on the bottom read " Entered according to act of Congress in the year1881 by Cosack and Clarke in the office of the Librarian of Congress at Washington.  Each card also says "Over", I don't know if there is another image on the other side, I didn't want to take the frame apart.           Below is a wonderful website that lists several series, this series is included.  Below is part of an article from the website.     http://www.tradecards.com/articles/articles.html     Series Trade Cards   by Ben Crane       Series trade cards are a set of cards that tell a story, usually comic, through their images and captions. The cards are usually also numbered to help the viewer progress through the story. Series are found having as few as 2 cards and as many as 10, but 3 to 5 cards seem to be the norm.      It is the author's belief that series trade cards were the forerunners of and the inspiration for the comic strip, the creation of which has been attributed to Richard Outcault for his Yellow Kid which first appeared in the New York Sunday World newspaper in February, 1896. This is about the time when using color in newspapers became economically feasible, causing the decline in advertising with trade cards which until then were the only cost effective way of using color in mass printing.      Buy with confidence as all our items are RETURNABLE, please check our excellent feedback rating.
