Very rare, original 1891, Autograph Letter Signed by former President Rutherford B Hayes. This very attractive, fully manuscript Letter measures approx. 5 1/2" x 8 1/2" and is dated January 22, 1891 from the Hayes estate in Fremont Ohio - Spiegel Grove. The Letter reads in full: "Gentlemen, / I am in receipt of the invitation which you have honored me for commencement week next summer. I am already engaged for that busy time and must therefore, with regrets and good wishes, excuse myself. / Sincerely, (signed)Rutherford B. Hayes". We are unsure of just which school was inviting the former President to its Commencement Exercises but given that this letter is dated approx. 50 years after Hayes graduated from Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, our guess is that this was an invitation from the Kenyon Reunion Committee. This wonderful, Rutherford B. Hayes Autograph Letter Signed (ALS) is in very good condition. The letter sheet is generally clean with 2 light horizontal mailing creases. The signature and the manuscript text are bold and strong. There is some light edge wear and light age toning at the edges as well as a very light spot of staining in the very center of the sheet. Overall this wonderful Rutherford B. Hayes Fully Manuscript, Signed Letter is well preserved, very attractive and displays beautifully.
