We've had similar tapestries over the years and some were marked France but most were marked Belgium and this one's more like the Belgium tapestries we've had and comes from the first decade or two of the 20th century. This one measures 56-1/2" long counting the fringes and 19" top to bottom. We've not washed this pc of woven muslin or heavy cotton but it's relatively clean except for one small spot of what looks like chocolate of all things up in the top right corner. The tapestry's texture is such that is has a depth lending itself to a 3-dimensional look. it depicts a classic Mid-Eastern scene which includes Arabs on highly decorated steeds approaching from the left with a Minaret in the background and what appears to be a temple in the foreground. A man is kneeling next to a blanket with goods in baskets which he seems to be selling at the steps of the temple In the center is a heavily laden camel lead by an elderly man with a white beard, followed by a younger trader with a similarly loaded camel while the older man asks a local man where to go to sell his goods. A third camel is in the distance an trudging up a dirt road with fig trees along one side. Another peddler is sitting upon steps to the right while another pair of aristocratic Arabs approach from the right side with ornately decorated stallions. There are n o holes in this beautiful tapestry and the small stain mentioned in the upper corner is ON the cloth and not IN it for you can feel a bit of stickiness which will no doubt come off if soaked in a cold bucket of water and perhaps oxyxlean or a similar substance. So if you're looking for a vintage tapestry to enhance the look of one of the rooms in your home, this will make an excellent wall hanging as it is or within a frame.
