Description

A RARE ORIGINAL ART DECO ALABASTER LAMP COMPLETELY ORIGINAL PARTS. SIGNED & DATED 1932 INCLUDING RARE MATCHING BOOKENDS OF BEETHOVEN AT THE PIANO This is a very stunning looking original art deco lamp made of alabaster.  On the two level base, there is a bronzed statue of the great composer Beethoven seated at an ornate piano, ready to strike the piano keys. The details are excellent on Beethoven, the piano, and you can even see the tiny musical notes on the book on top of the piano and the buttons on Beethoven's coat.  The figure and piano is signed J.B. Hirsch and by the artist Ruhl, and it is dated 1932. The face and hands of Beethoven and the keyboard are made of an ivory type material, just like the statues by D.H. Chiparus of the art deco period.  On the bottom of the lamp base, it is also signed and dated 1932. The lamp is made of the rare carmel alabaster and it is all original, nothing has been replaced, the wiring and silk wrapped cord is all original, and the dome shaped shade is also original, which is usually not the case, most of the time the shades have broken and were replaced, but this lamp is completely original and in excellent working order. This rare lamp was purchased many years ago from a New York estate sale. I was told that the original owner of the estate was one of the directors of the Metropolitan Museum of New York. Certainly this is a rich looking museum quality piece, and it looks very distinctive. When turned on, the colors of the alabaster shade look absolutely stunning, and the handsome statue of Beethoven at the base displays very well. I think anyone who loves quality and unusual pieces will love this lamp, especially if they collect art deco pieces, or are a music or Beethoven fan. There is a low opening bid on this lamp. One of the photographs shows the lamp displayed on a small vintage piano. Another photo shows a pair of Beethoven bookends that were made by the same company. The bookends will give you a close-up view of the statue that is on the base of the alabaster lamp.  The larger close-up photo of the lamp looks a little yellow, but the lamp as stated is a rare carmel color. I can send photos by email which can be enlarged on your computer to see more details. This wonderful lamp is being offered at a low opening bid, which is much less than I paid for it. As a bonus, the matching bookends are included. I am moving and can not take every object to my new apartment, hence the reason for selling it. But I know the new owner will love it. There is also a low buy it now, which, again, is less than I paid for it. I was told by an antique dealer who specializes in vintage alabaster lamps that this is worth several thousand dollars, and the bookends alone would cost around $500.00 at an antique shop.
