Description

Thank you for viewing my auction. I am now selling over a thousand items which I purchased in the 1950’s-80, at the London auctions, Christie’s, Sotheby’s, and Phillip’s (now Bonham’s). Much of it is ancient jewelry which was assembled in the Victorian period from elements found in the archeological excavations of that period. They were widely publicized and wearing such jewelry was fashionable for the elite. Because they reassembled and in most cases incomplete, we are selling the individual elements so more collectors can enjoy them. We were inspired to do so by Robert Liu’s statement in Collectable Beads, that the average collector will be unable to own a single ancient bead. Each is certified authentic. This is a group of three ancient Greek or Southern Italian (the South of Italy was populated by Greek colonies at the time) stone beads dating to about 450 BC. They are roughly disk form and laboriously hand polished and drilled. They are made of fine colored and grained hard stone and each is now partially covered with a calcium deposit from millennia of burial in wet soil. That coating is the subject of the Getty Museum Kouros which created such a controversy a few years back. In this instance it is the hallmark of authenticity, though it can be removed to reveal the lovely colors beneath if you desire. Ancient Greek beads are quite rare and the untouched excavated condition of these makes them even more rare and desirable. The largest is 9.5 mm (just under 3/8"). They are a fine addition to any antiquities collection or modern jewelry creation. Condition is as shown. 25A5 Visit our ebay store where we have more examples of Ancient Beads available for immediate purchase!
