Ulysses S Grant   DESCRIPTION: MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR: Three stampless postal covers (envelope-style) addressed to Lt Jenks Beaman, of the famed US 4th Infantry Regiment. All measure 8-1/4" x 4-3/4" and varying degrees of tan or manilla. The first cover  free-franked with a black two-line stamp, signed between the lines: TREAS:DEPART:OFFICIAL.JM McCallaSECOND AUDITOR The top of the franking stamp runs off the top of the cover. A 29mm single circle postmark WASHINGTON/D.C. 28/JUL with FREE curved above the circle, in red is stamped just left of center. The cover is addressed: Lt. J. Beaman Co E 4 Infy PueblaMexico   The second envelope is free-franked with a black two-line stamp ORDNANCE DEPT/O F F I C I A L. with a signature beneath it, and a manuscript charge to the left of the franking stamp. A 12mm "10" rate in red is stamped beneath the franking signature, a curved PAID in red is stamped to the lower left of the franking stamp, and a 29mm single circle postmark WASHINGTON CITY/D.C. NOV/21 in red.The cover is addressed: Lieut. J. BeamanMonterey Mexico NOTE: the Washington City postmark seems to have come from a damaged stamp and seems to be out-of-round and have a section that is farther out than the rest of the circle but connected to it.     The third envelope is free-franked similar to the second, with a black two-line stamp ORDNANCE DEPT/O F F I C I A L. with a signature beneath it, and a manuscript charge to the left of the franking stamp. A 12mm "10" rate in red is stamped beneath the franking signature, a curved PAID in red is stamped to the lower left of the franking stamp, and a 29mm single circle postmark WASHINGTON CITY/D.C. OCT/24 in red.The cover is addressed: Lieut. Jenks BeamanCorpus Christi TexasCare of the U.S. QuartermasterNew Orleans La   Jenks Beaman (   - 1848): American Army officer. Served as Lt in the famed 4th US Infantry in the Mexican War, the same unit as Ulysses S Grant. Beaman was noted for distinguished action under General Zachery Taylor in the battles of Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma, after which he was promoted to 1st Lt; led his company in the battles of Monterey, the Siege of Vera Cruz, and the assault and capture of Mexico City.
