Thank you for viewing my auction. I am now selling over a thousand items which I purchased in the 1950’s-80, at the London auctions, Christie’s, Sotheby’s, and Phillip’s (now Bonham’s). Much of it is ancient jewelry which was assembled in the Victorian period from elements found in the archeological excavations of that period. They were widely publicized and wearing such jewelry was fashionable for the elite.; Because they reassembled and in most cases incomplete, we are selling the individual elements so more collectors can enjoy them. We were inspired to do so by Robert Liu’s statement in Collectable Beads, that the average collector will be unable to own a single ancient bead. Each is certified authentic. This natural gem stone bead is a triple rarity. First, it dates from the Old Kingdom period in Egypt, about 2686-2134 BC. That is the time of great growth, art and building including the pyramids. Second, it is faceted to a pentagonal form. That is rare because it is five sided and nearly all faceted beads are an even number of sides so they are symmetrical when strung. Third (and fourth, depending how you count) it is a fine gem stone, garnet. And, evidently then as today, the finest garnet are those of the deepest red and uniform in color. These are all of that. It is about 7.5 mm in diameter. Of course, it is hand polished so the facets are slightly irregular, but that is as found on the best Egyptian jewelry of the period and these certainly rank among the best.
