This is a flaked stone pendant or amulet from ancient Egypt dating to the predynastiic period, before 3200 BC. It is over 1/2" (14.9 mm) across and shaped by napping, like a flint arrowhead. The hole is put in with a conical drill which was a bow drill with pointed wood tip which ground sand into the cavity until it was penetrated. That had to take many hours and was the most laborious part of the process. The end result is a very valuable piece of jewelry when it was made and used. It almost certainly had mystical power originally and probably was made to worship the sun which always played an important role in ancient Egyptian mythology. Its form and the fact that a highly reflective stone was used wound support that conclusion. This is both a wonderful artifact of the ancient Egyptians and a remarkable centerpiece for a modern bead creation. 2A18 Shipping is free Worldwide with the purchase of this item.
