When Mount Krakatoa erupted in 1883 it was the largest volcanic eruption on record, however, it had erupted many time before, sometimes with cataclysmic results. In the past few weeks, news of a "previously unknown culture" in Indonesia was published. In fact, it is one of the groups of the Majapahit Empire, the last Great Hindu Empire. It dominated Indonesia, Burma, Malaysia, Borneo and the Philippines from about 1293-1500. Prince Wijaya rose to power with the help of the Mongols who sent a thousand ship army to demand tribute from the Singhasari kingdom. Once in power, he turned on them and drove them out in 1293. Interestingly, Kublai Khan died in 1294 and the relationship of the decline of Mongol power and his advanced age can not be overlooked. Up for auction are 20 Javanese beads of the 13th century. They are opaque glass, about 2.7mm in diameter. These come from one of the most turbulent periods of Asian history, the expansion of the Mongol Empire and may well have been captured by the Mongols as beads were very valuable at that time and looted as well as taken in tribute. Today, they are wonderful artifacts of a lost civilization and fine addition to any modern jewelry creation. 40A25 Shipping is free Worldwide with the purchase of this item.
