Description

Woman's Sarong Ternate Village Alor Island Motif Moko Cotton with Natural Vegetable Dyes 26" X 45" 525 grams late 20th C MOTIF MOKO The design on this sarong is "MOKO" after the hourglass shaped bronze dongson drums that were deposited on this island - an nowhere else - in historical times. The "Moko" drums are still an important part of dowry gifting and there are still a few on the island but scarcity over time has resulted in an increasing number of elopements, which is not that much of a hardship as ferries to neighboring islands are cheap and plentiful. The condition of the artifact is excellent. There are no rips, holes or tears. The execution of the motif is tight by Alorese standards, the color saturation very good. The sarong is woven on a back strap loom in two sections and has been hand sewn together by hand. To see a picture of a back strap loom just click on the "about me" icon, I have posted one there. "Ikat" means literally "to tie" and the pattern is tie dyed into the threads before they are woven together. To see a photo of a loom in situ - just click the "about me" icon - I have one posted there. The packed weight of this item is 600 grams and the parcel will be rated as 1kg regardless of where it is sent leaving room for another small item to travel for free. I am happy to combine shipments of auctions that end at different time for you. Shipping by air service to US destinations $16.00 Shipping by expedited post within Canada $11.50C. Europe and most other countries by light packet air $29.90 Questions? Don't be shy! Powered by eBay Turbo Lister
