Thank you for viewing my auction. I am now selling over a thousand items which I purchased in the 1950’s-80, at the London auctions, Christie's, Sotheby's, and Phillip's (now Bonham's). Much of it is ancient jewelry which was assembled in the Victorian period from elements found in the archeological excavations of that period. They were widely publicized and wearing such jewelry was fashionable for the elite. Because they reassembled and in most cases incomplete, we are selling the individual elements so more collectors can enjoy them. We were inspired to do so by Robert Liu’s statement in Collectable Beads, that the average collector will be unable to own a single ancient bead. Each is certified authentic. The Mezcala culture evolved, from the Olmec, in central Guerrero state of Mexico and perpetuated human sacrifice. They lived an isolated existence in mountain valleys and evolved an abstract artistic style uninfluenced by other cultures and expressed primarily in hard stone carving 500 BC-100 AD. We purchased a Mezcala necklace incorporating hard stone beads of disk form, each laboriously hand polished and drilled. The necklace was originally purchased in Acapulco by a doctor many decades ago, inherited by his daughter from whom we purchased it, many years ago. Each bead would have taken many hours to work from a stone and was very valuable. Along with the beads were several small abstract hard stone human figures, effigies or amulets, executed in the Mezcala abstract manner with rudimentary anatomical details. All date about 200 BC and because the necklace was restrung and incomplete, we are reducing it back to its elements. Up for auction is one of the stone effigy figures. It is 12.7 mm high, about 1/2" and made of polished white chalcedony in the typical Mezcala abstract form. Imagine the days of labor it took to produce this little jewel! It is a fine addition to any antiquities collection or a modern jewelry creation. 52A10Visit our ebay store where we have more examples of Ancient Beads available for immediate purchase!
