Description

This important antique book is titled "The Works of Lord Byron Including the Suppressed Poems, also a Sketch of his Life", complete in one volume.  Published by Lippencott, 1854.  Inside the front cover is a signature of "Carry A. Nation" and underneath is "W.C.T.U. Home".  The next inside page has the upper right corner missing but does have (a name) "With Compliments of (another signature of Nation's matching the previous one) "Carry A. Nation" (next line) "W.C.T.U. Home", as shown in the pictures.  Found in Kansas in a wealthy estate sale.  A very good, rare find.  We are not experts on books or signatures of Carry Nation.  We are just stating what was found.  Under magnification, the ink appears to be from a fountain pen.  We do not know the connection to the estate other than there were hundreds of antique books there. She lived around Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas in her later life.  She lived out her last years in Eureka Springs, AR.  She died in Leavenworth, KS in 1911.  Additionally, she was distanced from the W.C.T.U. (Womens Christian Temperance Union) during the last part of her life for her extreme behavior with the temperance movement.  She was jailed, fined and banned from Kansas City, Missouri for hatcheting saloons and taverns on 12th St.  So she was well known in the area.  The only thing we can surmise is the book may have been signed during the time she was actually associated with the W.C.T.U Home, prior to any offenses.  Nation's first name was really Carrie but she later signed her name "Carry" as in "CARRY A NATION" for support of the temperance movement. The book's condition is that the front cover is well-worn leather as pictured, the back cover is not present.  The spine's cover is missing and the cover and first few pages are loose.  The spine is intact and possibly restorable.  Not sure as we don't know much about those things.  Looseness includes the signature page (signature on cover as well).  We don't think any internal pages are gone.  Could this have been a personal book of hers?...... Overall size of the front cover is roughly 6" x 9 1/4".  750+ pp.  Insect damage and foxing, as expected with the age.  A wonderful, great piece of history and we wish it a good home.  Start and reserve price are low.  10 day auction.
