Description

Submitted for your approval:   A beautiful example of what is known as a MAIN GAUCHE; literally: "left hand". This is a mid 19th. century piece manufactured in Spain by Artilleria Toledo about 1850. The main gauche was used extensively in Europe during the 17th. century as a left handed dagger to guard when fencing. The blade was commonly straight and frequently had prongs or an elongated crossguard to catch the blade of an adversary's sword. It has a short grip, as the thumb was extended on the blade. The quillons are long and straight and the counter guard is triangular in form and tapers to a point where it joins the pommel. The counterguard was elaborately chased and gilded to match the cup of the rapier with which it was used. This example follows closely to the form of its predecessors. The blade measures 11 7/8 inches in length and 1 1/2 inches wide at the ricasso; overall length is 16 1/2 inches. It is sharpened on one side from the point 9 3/8 inches to the ricasso; scalloped and gilded on the back portion and double edged for the last 5 1/2 inches. The blade shows minor oxidation and light pitting to the tip; grip and guard are stained but not rusted or pitted.  The blade; along with the counter is beautifully chased; approximately 80% gilt remaining to blade; very little to counterguard; quillons (crossguard) measures 9 inches accross; extremely fine copper wire covers the grip which is supported within a 4 section steel rod frame. Thumb depression on ricasso, and on reverse marked in 4 lines: ARTILLERIA / FABRICA / DE / TOLEDO.Steel pommel with serial # 63'85; original leather with steel throat and tip decorated to match the blade and guard; old repair to leather scabbard near the tip; fittings retain about 50% gilt; blade does not fit in the scabbard all the way due to shrinkage (1/2 inch gap at the throat).
