The Ghana Shoppers Basket is a sturdy, functional, versatile accent. And it’s eco-friendly! Use it this summer as a beach bag, use it in your craft room to store materials, or as a receptacle for magazines, newspapers and books. Its uses are as limitless as your imagination. These baskets hand woven by both the women and men of Bolgatanga. These baskets are very labor intensive; it takes approximately 3 days to complete one of medium size. The basket is made from the local grass called elephant grass that has been cured, dyed, and then tightly woven to ensure its durability. Weaving begins from the base and is worked upward. The rims are generally finished flat, or wrapped with straw to form a tube-like edge. After the basket is made, the remaining bits of straw that are sticking out of the basket are carefully trimmed off. The trimming is important because it determines how the basket will feel to touch. The leather handle is usually applied by local leather workers. The colors in this basket are fuschia, green, yellow and natural. This basket is 10.5 inches in height, has a circumference of 43 inches and a diameter of 15 X 10 inches.
