Description

Architecture Canterbury Cathedral 1887 "Canterbury Cathedral", by M. G. van Rensselaer. Discussion of the history and architecture of Canterbury Cathedral. This is an original article from Century Magazine, Vol. XXXIII, No. 6, April, 1887, 18 pp. (loose), 17 engravings, 6 1/4" x 9 1/4". About the Author:M. G. van Rensselaer, van Rensselaer, Schuyler, Mrs., 1851-1934. In many of her articles she did not openly comment on her gender, signing them simply as "MG van Rensselaer," but in all of her books she signed herself "Mrs. Schuyler van Rensselaer." She, apparently, thought that her articles on architecture would not have been accepted if her gender was generally known. She wrote many articles and books on architecture and archetectural trends. During the last half of the 19th century Harper's Weekly and Century Magazine Published many great articles on current and recent events in history, both national and international, the Arts, World Travel and much more. Though photography was developed (forgive the pun) during the 1840s the preferred medium for magazine illustration was the great art of engraving, until the 1890s when photographs began to replace engravings.
