Click Photo to Enlarge You are bidding on a White Thermoplastic ITT Model 500 C (formerly Kellogg ITT) telephone which dates to August of 1983.The phone is in excellent working condition but does show signs of fading and tanning around the plastic. The inner parts are very bright white but the outside has faded to an antique white finish. I have added a new white vinyl modular line cord (replacing the old satin colored one) and a reproduction Kellogg ITT dial center card (removing the peel n' stick grungy one that was on there). Originally these phones were manufactured under the Kellogg brand from approximately 1954 through 1959 and then from 1959 through 1967 as Kellogg ITT. In 1967/1968 ITT removed the "Kellogg" brand name from its products and moved the manufacturing facilities out of Chicago to Corinth, Mississippi. Manufacturing went on under the ITT brand name until approximately 1989 when ITT sold this division and it went private becoming Cortelco Kellogg. This is probably one of the last of the new style rotary 500's ever made as rotary dial phones phased out around 1983. At the time production began, Kellogg was a subsidiary of ITT. Kellogg's remnants are now know as Cortelco. This phone is a modern collectible because of its now dwindling numbers. Click Photo to Enlarge This telephone has been tested and works fine. It dials out, receives calls, talks, listens. This phone is as it was originally marked being color "15" or white. No special feature, "M" being metropolitan dial. 20 is for 20 Cycle and BA is for straightline biased. Its parts all match to 1983 except for the line cord which I replaced. The ringer rings ((((SUPER-LOUD)))) but can be adjusted by turning the little wheel poking through the bottom of the baseplate. The handset is marked ITT which matches the base shell logo. The tanning or fading matches between the base and handset. The handset cord is in excellent condition and has been cleaned by me. The only interesting feature of this is that the handset has a cutout for modular plug and jack but (as would be the case with the Bell System as well) the base is for a hardwired handset cord. Though this is hardly noticeable, it shows that this was a phone that was made during a transition phase where the factory was phasing out the hardwired phones and switching to modular spring cord systems instead. The 500 was designed for Western Electric by Henry Dreyfuss to replace the Western Electric 302 in the early to mid-1950s. By this time thermoplastic had become very popular in the post-war baby boom and a lot of folks wanted the "modern" look for their phones. Mr. Dreyfus obliged. The result was a variety of colors in the Western Electric palette, Kellogg and IT&T Palette, and Stromberg Carlson Palette, that persisted until the 1980's. By the late 1950's each manufacturer was licensing the design from Western Electric and producing nearly identical looking telephones. The parts inside this telephone are in fact genuine Kellogg manufactured parts. The dial is a Kellogg 19G dial and the network is a 425 Network made by Kellogg. Same with the receiver parts. The base shell is marked Kellogg ITT and the handset is marked GraBAR. Click Photo to Enlarge There are no serious scratches or cracks in this phone, however upon close examination it still bears some marks of its use and history, but otherwise it is functional and works beautifully. The dial and network are also dated 1963. Click Photo to Enlarge The Kellogg ITT Color Pallette as it existed at the time of manufacture listing all 12 colors.
