Description

Art Deco Western Electric 302 phone telephone antique vintageUp for auction is a restored Western Electric 302 phone. This phone was also nicknamed the "Dreyfuss phone" after its creator, the great art deco designer Henry Dreyfuss and the "Lucy phone" from its many appearances on the "I Love Lucy" show, the great comedy sitcom of the '50's. The phone was completely disassembled, cleaned, rebuilt and tested for good working order. Every part was cleaned and/or polished. The 5H dial was ultrasonically cleaned, lightly oiled and checked for proper return speed. The porcelain, metro-style (numbers + letters) "Z operator" dial plate is in very nice shape. The dial center is new and printed on good card stock. The dial center ring is hand-polished brass. The thermoplastic housing and the F1W Bakelite handset were buffed to a high gloss. The leather feet were nice enough so that they didn't need re-covered. The phone's baseplate was thorougly cleaned and is in very good shape. The ringer bells are brass and were polished out so that they ring clearly. The handset cord is a new curly cord in excellent shape. Added was a 10 ft. matching black vinyl cord that has the modular plug so it is ready to plug 'n play on today's phone jacks. It works fine and rings loud and clear with that old-timey sound that only a dual-toned ringer can do. If you would like to hear the ring of this phone, click here - 386 kb (56k'ers may want to save first - right click link-->"save target as"). This phone was most likely assembled in early 1947 as most of the date stamps are from then, however, the 5H dial (7/49) and the ringer (9/49) are from 1949. Some of the date stamps are thus: base = 12/47, coil and capacitor = 4th qtr 1947. Many, many hours were spent in this restoration of this phone. It is a functioning piece of nostalgia, a great conversation piece and a real beauty. $175 reserve.
