Offered here is a very nice early patent block plane: CHAPLIN'S PATENT BLOCK PLANE, ADJUSTABLE THROAT, NUMBER 20. This authentic block plane measures 6 1/2 inches long by 1 7/8 inches wide. The plane iron measures 1 9/16 inches wide. The front knob loosens to position the adjustable throat. This block plane is interesting as the cap straddles the plane iron and frog. There are no markings on this plane. The plane appears to be identical to the plane pictured in Smith's Patented Transitional & Metallic Planes in America 1827-1927, photo 194b right-hand side. All parts are original and clean. Beautiful patina and great japanning on the interior plane body. A great collectible plane offered at a low starting price with no reserve.
