CLASSIC ANCIENT VIKING CARNELIAN BEAD Click on the text links to view enlargements: 1-2 VIKING GEMSTONE BEADS Vikings occupied over half of present day England for more than a century. During that time they both manufactured and imported beads. They were especially fond of beads and often took them as tribute to avoid a raid. Items #54-57 are Viking carnelian beads. Each is hand polished and drilled, but retains some natural surface features as is typical for Viking beads as documented by the extensive excavations at York starting in the 1970’s and continuing today. Reference Carlsson, F9147 for another example from this group. #54. CLASSIC VIKING CARNELIAN BEAD. Very similar to the Carlsson example. About 1/3â€, (8 mm) compressed spherical form. Polished to produce surface luster but not shaped to a true sphere and some natural cleavage remaining. The classic large Viking bead with fine rich color and grain. We have a few.
