Description

Boston Tailor Sends Officer'sBill to Collection AgencyWhile Officer is Fighting for His Lifeon the Front Lines in Mexico!   DESCRIPTION: ADS 2pp 4to on Charles De Selding letterhead, Washington DC, February 26, 1847. A notice from a collection agency retained by the tailors John Earle Jr & Co., Boston, to Lieutenant Jenks Beaman, colleague of Captains US Grant and Robert E Lee in the famed US 4th Infantry. It seems that Lt Beaman still owes a sum for the uniforms he had made when being sent to war, and the tailor has turned the debt over to a collection agency! Feel the love for the fighting man! The second page gives an accounting of the clothes purchased, and a credit for $65 that Beaman has already paid. An interesting insight into the wardrobe of a junior officer of the US Army of this time period. In part: "Sir: I beg leave herewith to annex [a] copy of an account sent to me by Messers John Earle & Co., of Boston, for collection with instructions to solicit your earnest attention to its payment..."   "Uniform frock                                               23.00Forage Cap, Band & Cover                              6.50Six shirts @ $2.50 Uniform Frock $24             39.00uniform pants                                                   9.00Blue Cloth Cloak                                            35.00Blk doe pants                                                   9.00Uniform frock $24  Blue Dragoon Coat $23     47.00 " etc. Postal Cover has 12mm "10" rate stamped in orange and a single circle 32mm WASHINGTONCITY/D.C. / MAR 21 postmark, also in orange (no spaces between WASHINGTON and CITY).
