Disney Archivist Dave Smith was given the opportunity to select the 20 most significant moments in the history of Disney theme parks to assemble into a wonderful series of pins. The Hong Kong Disneyland opening was featured as the 20th and final pin in the series. It features Mickey Mouse as a pin-on-pin element in front of the Hong Kong Disneyland logo. The Dave Smith Collection logo, gold Mickey ears with Tinker Bell, is an additional pin-on-pin element to the design. When released as a limited edition, this pin was a limited edition of 2000 pins. I will include the rack release, as pictured on the top of the photo along with the prototype so that they can be displayed side-by-side. This is NOT the ordinary rack release version of this pin though. Rather, you are bidding on the prototype version of the pin, obtained directly from Disney at auction on the Disney Pin Cruise in November, 2006. Disney pin prototypes are the rarest of rare, often one of a kind pre-production samples sent for final color and design approval. In this auction you are getting just such a pre-production sample. While not all pre-production pins differ from the final production version, this one does, making it a one-of-a-kind pin prototype. Unlike the production version, featuring a background comprised of white enamel, the prototype pin is finished with a darker glitter-filled enamel, an added bit of detail that gives it a very different appearance than the final production version. Disney park release prototypes are some of the rarest pins a collector can come across, with many being retained by the company or destroyed. This wonderful prototype is a one-of-a-kind chance to own an unreleased variation of a very popular Disney pin.
