Thank you for viewing my auction. I am now selling over a thousand items which I purchased in the 1950’s-80, at the London auctions, Christie's, Sotheby's, and Phillip's (now Bonham's). Much of it is ancient jewelry which was assembled in the Victorian period from elements found in the archeological excavations of that period. They were widely publicized and wearing such jewelry was fashionable for the elite. Because they reassembled and in most cases incomplete, we are selling the individual elements so more collectors can enjoy them. We were inspired to do so by Robert Liu’s statement in Collectable Beads, that the average collector will be unable to own a single ancient bead. Each is certified authentic. This is a set of four inlet spherical carnelian beads dating to the time of Christ. They are in 4.5 mm to 5.1mm in diameter. Carnelian is in the agate/quartz/flint family and flakes along natural fracture lines. For that reason forming the sphere is more difficult than a flatter section and "donut" shaped beads are more common. Each bead is flaked, like an arrowhead to a rough form, then hand polished on another hard stone for hours to achieve the final form and finish. When made, each bead was a valuable item due to the amount of labor involved. They are fine additions to any antiquities collection or a modern jewelry creation. 49A31 Visit our ebay store where we have more examples of Ancient Roman Beads for immediate purchase!
