Description

This is a beautiful hand printed silver halide reproduction photograph, not a digital inkjet print (custom printed in a darkroom from a negative, archivally developed in chemistry on Ilford 'Pearl' surface semi-matte surface black & white photographic paper, and mounted on an 8x10 inch backing board) of the airplane that made the first non-stop flight to Hawaii from California. The first successful flight from the USA was made by pilots Lt. Albert F. Hegenberger & Lt. Lester J. Maitland of the Army Air Corps on June 28-29 1927. It was made in a single wing Fokker Tri-Motor aircraft named “Bird of Paradise”. It landed after more than 26 hours, at Schofield Barracks, near Wahiawa, Oahu. Photographer: Lt. John Virgil Lowe Courtesy: Hawaii State ArchiveS / War department. Later that year James D. Dole, the Hawaii pineapple magnate, put up a prize of $25,000 for the first airplane to fly the 3870 kilometers (2400 miles) from Oakland, California to Honolulu, Hawaii, and $10,000 for second place. The race began on 16 August 1927. 14 July, Ernie Smith and Emory Bronte, took off from Oakland in ‘The City of Oakland’:, a small civilian monoplane, and, upon running out of fuel 26 hours and 36 minutes later, crash-landed in a thorn tree on Molokai. Dole disqualified both of them from his prizes because they did not land in Honolulu. The initial take offs were plagued with trouble. Just before 11am, ‘Oklahoma’ took off. The crew would eventially abort the flight over San Francisco. She was followed by ‘El Encanto’, which had not cleared the runway before she swerved and crashed. ‘Pabco Flyer’ lifted momentarily into the air, then crashed some 7000 feet from the runway. Their crews were not hurt. ‘Golden Eagle’ took off smoothly and flew out of sight. ‘Miss Doran’ succeeded in taking off, but circled back and landed less than ten minutes later. Then ‘Dallas Spirit’ returned to Oakland. ‘Aloha’ and ‘Woolaroc’ took off uneventfully, and ‘Miss Doran’ succeeded on her second attempt. ‘Pabco Flyer’ also tried and crashed a second time. The TravelAir plane ‘Wollaroc’ won the race in 26 hours, earning Pilots Art Goebel and Davis first prize. Aloha second arrived in 28 hours. Neither Golden Eagle nor Miss Doran were ever seen again. The search for the Golden Eagle and Miss Doran was aided by three submarines, after repairing Dallas Spirit, Erwin and Eichwaldt joined the search leaving Oakland for Honolulu. They were never seen again, either. With proper care this print should last 100 years. FREE SHIPPING by USPS First Class Mail to orders in the USA ONLY! PLEASE ALSO NOTE: e-Bay's transfer process and the computer screen makes the photo look contrasty and slightly darker or lighter, depending on your monitor brightness and contrast setting. The photo offered has more gray tones, has deep richer blacks, less contrast, and has the unique look of a real silver halide gelatin print. You may be able to see small imperfections on the larger prints. This photo is printed on 8x10 inch paper and may be 'full frame' from a 35 mm negative. When it is attached to the single matt backing board you will be able to see the the backing board (colors vary, sorry no choices) around the borders of the print. It usually makes the print look like there is a margin around it. If you don't like the backing board margins showing when fit into a standard 8x10" frame you can always use it as a backing board and purchase a larger custom cut matt (most frame shops will cut a custom matt for less than $10.00) that will fit into a standard 11x14" or larger custom frame of your own liking. This is recommended for best visual and artistic impact in displaying this photo, although many people are happy using a standard 8x10" frame and displaying the image as is. They look pretty good either way. We've never had any complaints! BUYERS OUTSIDE THE USA PLEASE NOTE: We do not pay customs fees, duties, or tariffs to shipments outside the USA, nor include them in our shipping and handling charges, or selling price. Since we are not a resident/citizen of the destination location, the buyer is responsible for paying any customs fees assessed to the shipment by their country's customs department. For example, international shipping rates may or may not include pickup and door-to-door delivery with customs clearance. Your package will arrive at your door, but then you might need to pay extra international fees. Even if duties and taxes were not applicable there may still be an administrative fee for processing the goods through the border. As a buyer, it is important to be aware of what customs charges, duties, rules, and fees may apply when receiving shipments from out of your country and the product before you bid or purchase your item.
