Here is another trade axe that dates back into the mid to late 1700's. See my discription on the history of these axes in a listing posted earlier today with another one. This one was found in northern Wisconsin in the late 1970's at the site of an old logging camp near a river. It was uncovered while seaching for old logging artifacts. It however would have dated back around 100 years before the logging camp was being occupied. This would indicate that both the logging camp owner and the French voyagers from a hundred years earlier would have selected the same type of location along this river for there base of operations. The axe head weighs 2# and is 6 1/2" long and just under 3" at its widest point, again this axe head shows an unreadable touch mark. This one is in very good condition considering its over 200 years old. These items are scarce and are great collectors items, this one especially so because of its connection to an 1880's logging camp in northern Wisconsin.
