GEM CATALOG geology jewel mineralogy mining 1900 Tassin Shipping Info Description Descriptive Catalog of the Collection of Gems in the US National Museum 1900 by Wirt Tassin     This is a vintage article that was originally bound with many other scientific articles into one large U.S. government report. In this case, the original book was broken or wrecked at some point, so the remaining articles were removed and stapled into individual paper covers. The government reports contain many articles, some original and some reprinted from other obscure sources. Articles like this are often overlooked by those who might find them of interest, because they rarely turn up in online title searches; and when it is located, the whole book and all the unrelated articles must be purchased as one.     This complete original article is from an 1900 US museum report, likely published the following year. It has 197 pages of text, (pages numbered 473-670), illustrated with 9 plates of b&w photographs and 26 figure drawings; includes table of contents and lists of illustrations, and bibliography. First edition / first appearance in print.     Contents include: Definition and Properties of Gem Minerals, Description of Minerals Used as Gems (alphabetical, over 80 listed - from albite, amber, and andalusite to vesuvianite, willemite and zircon); Comparative Tables of the colors and distinguishing characters of the better-known gems, Index of Names of Gems, The Cutting of Gem Stones (brilliant, double- and half-brilliant cuts, trap, Portuguese and star cuts, rose and step cuts, mixed table and Cabochon cuts), Catalog of the Isaac Lea Collection of Gems, and more.     Many illustrations - plate photos show azurite and malachite from Arizona, crocidolite in quartz from South Africa, Amazonstone of Colorado, Quartz crystals from France, Opalized wood from Idaho, Carnelian agate from Uruguay, Rutile in quartz from North Carolina, Topaz with smoky quartz and Siberian topaz. Figures show other types of gems and cuts and diagrams, and stones of the astrological zodiac and of the planets.     (Geology, Rocks, Minerals, Precious Stones, Catalog, Gemology, Natural History, Nature, 19th Century, Sciences, Technology, Reference, Research, United States, Government Publications, Local and Regional History, Antiquarian Books, Paper and Ephemera).     Measures 6 by 9.25 inches; nicely glued into paper covers, small pencil note to back cover; one or two tiny edge tears, a couple of pages have a minimal wrinkle, otherwise clean.
