Genuine old "period" Civil War .44 percussion cartridge box for Colt, Remington, and other military revolvers. This really may be a rare one. It is die-stamped "MAKER", only, on the face of the leather cartridge box (underneath the lid). That is, there is no actual maker stated, just the word "maker" to indicate where the maker's actual stamp should be. Apparantly this is one of the boxes that the government gave to sub-contractors as a sample. Somewhat humorously, this is one among the many that is truly "maker stamped". Obviously there would have been just a handful of these so marked. To complicate matters, however, there is a makers stamp in small letters on the front of the lid, bottom "J. Davy & Co. Newark NJ" , who probably made the samples for the government. Additionally, the latch strap is longer and wider than usually encountered - but it is the original. The belt straps are fine. The box overall is in sound condition, showing honest old usage. This came from a man who obtained all his Civil War artifacts right off Bannerman's Island arsenal in the early 1960's. The lid is 7" wide. The box is 5 1/2 inches wide. Now I understand my description relating to the maker stamp is somewhat speculative. However, I can think of no conflicting possibilities. Any thoughts? NO reserve.
