**************EVERYONE's FAVORITE- HOT OUT OF THE KILN!*********** "RAKU-FIRED POTTERY TURTLE TRIVET / WALLHANGING" HANDCRAFTED POTTERY TURTLE FORMED AND DETAILED OUT OF CLAY/FIRED/HANDPAINTED and then fired again in a special RAKU kiln to just under 2000 degrees. Once the pottery turtles reach the desired temp, they are removed from the RAKU kiln using tongs and special fire-proof gloves. The turtles are placed into a pit of shredded paper and leaves, immedietly BURSTING INTO FLAMES! Quickly the pit is covered to smother the flames, allowing the dense smoke to soak into the clay turtle bodies. Any areas that are not painted become the rich smokey black color that you see highlighting these colorful turtle creations. The underside of the turtle has hangers fired into the clay to hang the turtle on the wall, or you may use the turtle as a trivet, paperweight or decorative figurine. Of course, it is completely tolerant of heat (from hot pot or serving dish) and can simply be wiped with a damp cloth to lightly clean. Though the piece is lightly sealed to protect it from staining, it is suggested that one does not ever immerse it in water as RAKU style of firing often render the piece to fine cracks and a more porous surface than conventionally fired pottery.
