Swimsuits of the 1950sAn Advertising Survey Archives of Advertising seriesby William McBride Archives of Advertising, 2001. Brand new CD-ROM. One hundred color and black-and-white pictorial magazine and newspaper ads for the last swimsuits before the bikini era. Brands include Jantzen, Rose Marie Reid, Cole of California, etc. Seen here are typical screen shots from the CD. To the left of each screen you can see the browsing menu functions: Slide Show and Browse (typically by year, maker and model). A zoom feature allows close inspection of each ad. Saved from the disc and printed using any graphics program and a color printer, the images are amazingly true to the originals in detail and color. In addition you can read a short analytical essay or timeline that explains further the history of the products included. Essays are written by Bill McBride, former advertising copywriter and creative director, and former advertising columnist for Old Cars Weekly and Car Exchange magazine. A printable chronological checklist of the ads, including magazine where published and date, is also included. The CD is HTML-based and so can be viewed on any computer, whether running Windows, Mac or Unix, that has a web browser such as Internet Explorer 5+, Mozilla Firefox, Opera or similar. (arboc427) Who are Run For Cover! ?Those of you who, from time to time, fill a few idle minutes by checking our Run For Cover! eBay auctions know that we have been selling a selection of off-beat books on many subjects, largely reprints bought from a publisher called the Gordon Press, who closed down a couple of years ago. We have for a while been planning to begin publishing ourselves, and have recently started asking our customers if there are scarce and unavailable books that they would like to see us reprint. We have had many excellent suggestions which we will be working to bring into print in the coming months -- and welcome any new ideas you may have. Francis Neilson's "The Churchill Legend" (see our separate listing) is our first reprint under our publishing name, 29 Books. In case you were wondering, Run For Cover! (and 29 Books, for that matter) is very much a mom-and-pop operation, with a little help from our part-time packers and shippers. We -- that's Paul Mann and Joanna Wissinger -- are a small enough operation that when someone buys a book from us we follow the progress of their order individually, and if they email us or call us on the phone, we are able to give them personal attention. We aren't perfect -- oh no! Being human, sometimes we do forget a buyer's name. But the aim is to provide the sort of attentive, interested service that Amazon and Barnes & Noble simply cannot.
