JEWISH YIDDISH SIGNS LABOR DAY PROTEST PHOTO The2FunAdGuyz offer a new, high quality reproduction, print of a dramatic 1909 photograph of a labor union protest against child labor. Surrounded by spectators, two young girls wear signs, one in English and the other in Yiddish, reading ABOLISHED SLAVERY! One girl is carrying an American flag. The photo was taken just before the New York City May Day parade on May 1, 1909. These May Day Labor parades were held around the world during this period though they have, in the United States, since given way to the Labor Day held in early September. The event had become associated with socialism and communism, though, ironically, they were originally held to commemorate The Haymaker Riot in Chicago where workers striking for an eight-hour workday were involved in a controversial incident. Eventually child labor was abolished in the United States during the Progressive Era, but children in other countries around the world are still employed today.
