Description

John Joseph COPPINGER (1834-1909) Irish-born soldier who served in the brave but hopeless defense of Umbria at the behest of the Pope in 1860. Coppinger accepted an officer's commission in the Union army, which which he served with distinction at Bull Run (wounded), Chacellorsville, Gettysburg, Mine Run, The Wilderness, Cold Harbor, and Appomattox (wounded). He is buried at Arlington. A.L.S. 2pp. 200x125 mm. on Metropolitan Club letterhead, Washington, 21 Nov. 1999 to a doctor thanking him "...very much for the book which I have just received from Mrs Emmett. I have read it with great interest. I found information concerning the earlier immigration I had not before received..." Also together with a second A.L.S. 1p. 200x125 mm., on "Headquarters Department of the Platte", Omaha, Neb., 18 May, 1895 honoring an autograph request.
