antiquemola Offered for auction is a very old Cuna Indian Mola. From the San Blas Islands off the coast of Panama these colorful textiles were fashioned into clothing by the women who did this painstaking delicate work. Layers of cloth were cut by hand exposing the colors underneath. In some cases appliqués were added as well as decorative stitching. The value of these is often determined by both the subject matter as well as the skill of the artist. A view of the reverse side shows the tiny and delicate hand stitches used in this piece. This was given to me as a gift upon my first visit to the area in the 1970's. At that time it was reported to be over 50 years old. It has been stored away ever since. Featuring an abstract motif, the colors are rich and vibrant, and much nicer that our photography depicts. This measures approximately 20" x 14" with raw edges and a peculiar boarder along one side. There was on spot of of irregular color noted in the last picture with the pencil for reference. There is no other damage to report with the cloth remaining strong and sturdy until this day.
