Description

Vintage German PC entitled "Andenken an Lionel, den Lowenmenschen" (In Memory of Lionel the Lion Man). It features a portrait of Stephan Bibrowsky (1890-1932). He suffered from hypertrichosis, a rare genetic disease that covers the entire bodies of the subjects with a thick coat of fur. He was discovered by a German man named Meyer aged four and became famous throughout Europe, gaining the nickname Lionel the Lion-Faced Man. He also became a featured attraction with Barnum and Bailey in USA. As per the portrait on the card, he was not exhibited as a beast, often wearing the best clothes to show that despite his looks, he was a literate and enjoyable person that spoke five languages! PC postally unused and not in the best of conditions. Card has some bends and has a couple of vintage repairs on reverse (two wee bits of tape!). Wear to edges and reverse a bit grubby but interesting man and card.  Please see my other auctions - combine postage when paid together PLEASE ENSURE CORRECT POSTAGE AMOUNT IS PAID. Postage rates (First Class/Airmail uninsured) - £0.70 within UK, £1.20 within Europe and £1.60 to Rest of World. Pay me with PayPal. I don't charge my buyers extra!
