Lewis Cass (1782-1866), soldier, politician, and diplomat. As Brigadier General in the War of 1812, Cass participated in the Battle of the Thames, and as reward for his service he was appointed Governor of the Territory of Michigan by President James Madison. He served as Territorial Governor from 1813 to 1831. Cass served as Secretary of War from 1831 to 1836 under Andrew Jackson, Ambassador to France from 1836 to 1842, Senator from 1845 to 1848, 1849, and 1857, and Secretary of State under James Buchanan from 1857 to 1860. In 1848, Cass ran unsuccessfully for president.A cut, Free Frank signature of Lewis Cass, glued to cut album paper. It is fairly discolored/soiled.
