MAGNETIC HEALING MACHINE ART POSTER QUACK MEDICINE The2FunAdGuyz offer a great new, high-quality reproduction print of an 1848 poster advertising one of the most controversial types of medical machinery. “Moorhead’s Improved, Graduated Magnetic Machine†is the product presented and it also the copy that appears above and around the illustration. The illustration shows a man beside a table with a machine on it. Two women are shown nearby. One woman holds two handles, one in each hand, and each handle has a wire running back to the machine. Presumably she is about to receive an electromagnetic charge to help her heal. The caption reads: “Manufactured and Sold Wholesale and Retail by D. C. Moorhead, No. 182 Broadway, New York.†Magnetic healing was at its height of popularity at the time, both in America and Europe, and similar machines were advertised in the Sears Roebuck Catalogue. The theory behind it was that some sort of metallic imbalance or disturbance was responsible for many diseases. By sending a jolt of magnetic energy through the body such imbalances could be changed and the original balance achieved. The theory has been debated for centuries. Even today, healing magnets and electro-shock therapy are debated. More recently lawsuits charging that high-powered electric lines can cause cancer are filed. The more things change, the more they remain the same. However, this piece captures an interesting and controversial phenomenon in the medical field. This print is on a high-quality 100# glossy text paper. The actual image measures 10.5†(w) X 14.25 †(h). The paper is 11†(w) x 17†(h). Therefore, it has a small border to allow for framing.
