loot7 Store MANY DIFFERENT INSECTS AAA MADAGASCAR COPAL Size: 3 3 /8 inch long x almost 3/4" wide x 1/2 inch thick. Weight: 9.2 grams. Play of color: This copal amber straw is a polished transparent golden yellow color. Many species of insects are readily seen. Flies. A big bee or long legged fly. A headless moth or long winged termite. Other insects as well. Magnification will help identify the different types & species. Look at the pics! A straw like formation. Collected near the Antsiranana region in Madagascar. According to the geological record where it is found.... it dates Pliocene, approximately (3 million) years old. This piece of amber copal looks like a golden piece of ice. Individual insects, many that can be easily seen with the naked eye. Look at the pics.....You identify them! Nicely detailed transparent anatomies. You definately need magnification to see them all. I estimate these tunnel formations to be a very, very small percentage of the copal found from this location. About 1/2% out of tons of kilos. Rare to begin with. I find these copal tunnel straws to be the very best insect inclusions Madagascar Copal has to offer. So the controversy still rages concerning this young copal amber. Some experts say 500,000 to 1,500,000 million years in age from the Pleistocene Era. Others claim Miocene in age which is at least 40 million years old. Then there are those who will convince you it is no older than 200 years in age ....if that!....maybe yesterday. I take the middle ground. What if there is a range of age as in copal/amber found elsewhere? These extruded tunnels of copal are the coolest shapes. There are many other forms of copal ranging from huge hunks to icicle shaped tunnels. Classic amber is prehistoric tree sap called succinite which contains enough succinic acid (that occurs in 60-150 million year old Jurassic Period amber for example) to be categorized as amber. The fanatical amberphiles say it must be 90 million years old! All I know is I love the insect inclusions. The insects found in it are fossils, older than me. The material you see here will someday be classified as true amber. At this stage, it is considered juvenile. Now for the bugs! The insect inclusions, in order to classify as an extinct fossil species, must not be presently wandering the earth. I do not know enough about the current entomology of Madagascar to say fossil or no....but I do know that some of the Neuroptera, Diptera, Hymenoptera, Isoptera, Coleoptera, Nemotopcara, and Araneae (that is mayflies, flies, gnats, midges, ticks, termites, ants, beetles, wasps and spiders) resemble and/or look identical to some of the insects I see in 100 million year old Baltic Amber. So there you have it! My advice is get a piece, prove everyone wrong by identifying a new bug in this copal amber, yet known, and have it named after yourself. Till someone proves otherwise to me, this is my belief. This young copal amber is from near Cap d' Ambre, Madagascar. Worth many times my starting bid. Get some while the supply lasts. Like everthing else coming out of Madagascar, the supply will soon deplete. Prices on this copal amber will definately rise before the end of this year.
