Superb Mobile, Alabama, item from the firm of John Bowen. Located at #20 Water Street, Bowen sold pianos, looking glasses, carpeting, mattresses, doors, sashes, and other furniture. This is a receipt dated 21 April 1853 for one sofa and a dozen maple chairs costing $57.75. Part-printed blue paper and completed in dark brown ink. Great engraving of a chair and pianoforte. The furniture purchased was shipped by river north into Alabama, but the name of the boat is not given. Great specimen of antebellum ephemera which would frame nicely.
