Description

Great war dated document from a grocer in Mobile, Alabama. Dated 15 February 1861, this documents the purchase of staple goods from the grocery firm of Wm. H. Ross located at the corner of Commerce and Front Streets (#38 respectively). Items purchased include 2 barrels of flour, 2 barrels of sugar, one box of cheese, one barrel of buckwheat, kerosene oil, 2 barrels of potatoes, 1 1/2 bushels of green beans, one barrel of molasses, 1/2 barrel mess mackeral, and one sack coffee. Some of these items were undoubtedly intended for use by slaves to include the fish, buckwheat, and molasses.   What is really neat is that the steamer which carried these good to Selma is identified as the packet boat St. Charles, a great documentation of steamboats operating under Confederate control. Small stain at upper right and small tear at very bottom, otherwise in superb condition.
