N230 Kinney Famous Running Horses: Shotover This series of tobacco or cigarette cards showing English racehorses was the second of three sets of horses produced by the American tobacco company Kinney Brothers in 1890. Each card shows the horse and rider, and both are named in the caption along with the races won by the horse. The backs have a redemption ad; if the customer sent in 25 of the cards he would get a large picture on heavy paper of any one of the horses presented in the series. Simple in design, each front shows an ad for Kinney’s High Class cigarettes. A tan background extends to the edge of the card. This particular card features “Shotoverâ€, winner of the Derby in 1862, and his jockey “T. Cannonâ€. Condition: I would grade this card VG; some rounding to the corners. No creases, wrinkles or paper loss. The card (36 x 65mm) appears slightly shorter than is usual for this set and is cut at an angle; I believe this was done when the card was originally cut, rather than being cut down at a later date. A tidy example of this very early equestrian set, for any collector of cigarette cards, horseracing memorabilia or ephemera. Please see my “other itemsâ€; I am listing more rare early tobacco cards from Allen & Ginter, Kinney, Kimball, Imperial Tobacco Company, Duke, Buchner etc over the next few weeks!! I will happily combine postage if anyone wins more than one item. I regularly sell to North America and around the world, and take payment in US dollars and British pounds. Postage £1 within UK, £2 ($4) overseas.
