Description

NYC 6 SUBWAY TOKENS 1953-2003 NEW YORK CITY MTA - TRANSIT AUTHORITY                 Brief description and some basic facts about each of these 6 tokens: The Metropolitan Transportation Authority ended all sales of the tokens at midnight April 12, 2003 leaving the Metrocard the exclusive currency of straphangers. The token is sure to live on, as an item of nostalgia and icon of New York. FIRST TOKEN “SMALL Y” 1953-1970- Slightly smaller than a dime, was issued in July 1953 when the subway fare was increased from a dime to 15 cents. This is the smallest of all the tokens.   Both side of this token show NYC in the center with the Y being a cut-out.   One side states NEW YORK CITY TRANSIT AUTHORITY & the other side states GOOD FOR ONE FARE. The token sold at 15 cents from 1953-1966 and at 20 cents from 1966-1970. SECOND TOKEN “LARGE Y” 1970-1980- Was issued January 7, 1970.   This brass token is similar to the first one except that it is slightly smaller than a quarter. The token sold for 30 cents from 1970-1972, 35 cents 1972-1975, and 50 cents 1975-1980. THIRD TOKEN “DIAMOND JUBILEE” 1979-1980-  Same size as the 2nd token. Was issued to commemorate the 75th year anniversary of the NYC Subway system. One side of this token states NYC SUBWAY 1904-1979 People Moving People.   This side also shows the classic architectural structure representing a typical NYC subway entrance.   The other side shows a train, and states DIAMOND JUBILEE 75TH ANNIVERSARY NYC SUBWAY 1904-1979.   This token has a diamond cut-out at the top center. This token sold for 50 cents.    FOURTH TOKEN “SOLID BRASS” 1980-1985- Is almost the same as the 2nd token with the exception that the “Y” is not cut-out. This token sold for 60 cents from 1980-1981, 75 cents 1981-1983, and 90 cents 1984-1985.FIFTH TOKEN “BULLSEYE” 1986-1995-  This brass token is of the same size and inscriptions as the 4th token.   A steel or aluminum 5/16 inch diameter disc is at the center. This token sold for $1.00 from 1986-1990, $1.15 1990-1992, and $1.25 1992-1995.SIXTH TOKEN “5 BOROUGHS”- is slightly smaller than a nickel and has a cut-out in the shape of a pentagon.  Each side of the pentagon represents a borough. The inscriptions on this token are the same as those of the 5th token. This token sold for $1.50 and was replaced by the Metrocard on 4/13/03.   A Metrocard (no money on card) is also included in the auction   These tokens are used but are in excellent condition.
