I HAVE THE GREAT PLEASURE TO BE OFFERING YOU THE WORK OF BEN TE KARU - master bone carver from Christchurch New Zealand. Ben's beautiful hand carved and engraved carving work is well known in New Zealand and I am thrilled to bring you his wonderful pieces. This EXQUISITE HEI MATAU fish hook bone carving by Ben features hand crafted traditional Maori engraving on both sides and is fully bound in the old style with flax thread. On one side is Ben's signature of an eye with tears in memory of the passing of a dear friend who died much too young. Ben is known as "The Eye" carver because of this signature. It measures 2" long by 1.4" - very rounded and three dimensional. Bound onto an adjustable plaited black cord. The Hei Matau represents the legendary fish hook with which Maori demi god Maui is said to have pulled the North Island of New Zealand from the South Island. PLEASE BE AWARE THAT MOST OF THE BONE CARVINGS YOU SEE ON EBAY ARE MASS PRODUCED OUTSIDE OF NEW ZEALAND.
