This is a unusual (I believe) hand woven coverlet. The woven part is wool, I believe, and is Navy Blue. The woven scheme is quite detailed. The "backing" it is woven on is a creamy colored white. It is old, but I have no idea how old. It has some condition problems. I have taken quite a few pictures to detail the condition of the coverlet. The coverlet measures 90" X 60". The pictures were taken on a queen size bed so you can estimate the size. There is no border, just rough edges. Each "section" is 14" wide and there is 1" of the backing in between each of the woven areas. This backing is a creamy colored white and it has some orange colored threads running thru it. Kinda like hardanger cloth. I apologize, I'm not sure I spelled that correctly, but this is what it reminds me of. Then the blue wool thread is woven thru this backing. As indicated, there is no border along the long side, just rough edges. The top and bottom of the coverlet has been turned under and hemmed. There are 7 woven areas that are 60" wide each. The coverlet was actually done in two pieces, I think, because there is a seam down the middle where it was sewn together and each section measures 30", therefore making it 60" in width. Each end, the top and bottom portion, measures about 8 1/2 inches wide while the main part of the weaving is 14 inches wide as indicated above. I think this was made pre-1940. My husband and I are in the process of downsizing, and this is one of the articles that must go. The coverlet was made by a family member who did all types of hand work, embroidery, needlepoint, smocking, weaving, quilting, tatting, etc. The coverlet seems clean, but I have never washed it. It seems very fragile and I was afraid I would harm it. But it has not been around smoke or pets. I wish I knew more about this piece, but I don't. If you have any questions, please ask and I'll try to answer as best as I can. I've taken quite a few pictures trying to show how unusual this vintage piece is and also to indicate the areas where conditioning may be a factor. Again, this is a beautiful, hand made coverlet that has some condition problems. It has been pieced together in some areas to conceal some of the condition problems. I did not do this, frankly, I wouldn't know where to start or stop. I can't imagine making something like this. But if you like old things, and something that is unusual, this is for you. IF you have any questions, please let me know. As I indicated, I know very little about this, but as I examined it while measuring it, I just couldn't imagine working on something like this. A lot of counting went on during the creation of this piece. I am 68 years old and had 3 grandmothers who quilted. One did all kinds of handwork, some of which I don't know what to call. She was from French Canada and completed this piece. I don't know what or where she used it, but it is "quite" warm. I would make a nice antique wall hanging. Again, let me know if you have any questions.
