Darling estate found early twentieth century German paper mache candy container in the form of two brightly feathered chickens roosting in a tree stump on a wooden base. Offered with no reserve. Top chicken has red tail feathers, a cloth covered body with white fur, felt comb and wire legs with painted feet on a round wood lid (serves as the lid to the candy container which is the interior of the hollow tree stump) . The roosting chicken has bright red & green tail feathers with a cloth & fur covered body, felt comb and an opening in the bottom which fits over one molded “egg†in nest on bottom branch. Measures approximately 7-1/2†high, base measures 2-3/4†long x 1-1/2†wide x 1/8†thick. Unmarked, but most certainly of German manufacture, circa 1900-1910. Very good condition: beak chipped on sitting chicken, no other nicks, chips, cracks, breaks, touch-ups or repairs. Slight, uniform age soiling to cloth, with some loss to white rabbit fur which simulates the body feathers (nearly all gone on right side of top chicken).
