ORIGINAL BRENDA STARR ART!Drawn and Doubly SIGNED by Chicago Tribune Artist, Dale MessickFrom the Collection of Judy M Johnson This is an original inked panel for the September 23, 1969 issue of the Chicago Tribune Newspaper. It is doubly signed by the artist, Dale Messick, both in the comic panel, and above, signed in red, in the personalization which reads: "Merry Christmas Ken - From Brenda Starr & Dale Messick." Dale Messick originated the popular character of ace news reporter, Brenda Starr. She added a paper doll feature for which fans could submit fashions to be redrawn by Ms. Messick to appear in the Sunday full color comic section. Brenda Starr appeared in hundreds of newspapers across the U.S.beginning in 1940. Brenda was a dynamic woman in a career world dominated mostly by men, and did it oh-so fashionably. The pink poodle and resulting poodle skirts, figurines, lamps, etc were inspired by Dale Messick with her Pink Poodle Club in the strip. Movies, dolls, toys, clothing and more have been successful  spin-offs of this delightful character. We lost Ms. Messick and her wonderful talents in 2005 at the vibrant age of 92. The comic strip is carried on today by artists, June Brigman and Mary Schmich. Ms. Messick's daughter carries her mother's memories as she was named Starr, after the comic character who was "born" before she was. This particular piece was sent to one of her biggest fans, Ken Knutson asa Christmas gift in December of 1969. Mr. Knutson died of injuries due to a car accidentabout 1987 or 1988. This art was purchased by me from the largeestate sale of Mr. Knutson's sister, outside of Chicago in 1992. The images shown to the left are all part of one 15.5"x5" piece, but we lost clarity showing in full width. This gives you a better look at the actual art. Ken had been one of my own biggest fans, having purchased literallyevery paper doll I ever painted for myself or for publishers, or that I had purchased for resale. This marvelous art was amongthe several TONS of paper dolls and celebrity memorabilia in his estate. The art is inked on an illustration board showing very light "photo blue" lines to guide the artist's lines. Original pencil sketch lines are also lightly visible. The size is 15.5" wide by 5" high. A photo-copy of the panel's appearancein the Chicago Tribune is included. Here's an authentic piece of Americana that you could own. This will be of interest to comic collectors, paper doll collectors, and fans of original comic art.(Insurance is already added into the USPS Priority shipping fee.)If you should happen to buy any other products from my listings, I will save you $$ and combine shipping fees.
