Description

Up for bid is a 6 1/2 inch diameter porcelain "WITCH OF THE WAVE" commemorative plate. There is a gold rim around the plate with a picture of the sailing ship in the center. The picture is set within a circle outlined by a gold rope and the name of the ship appears on a gold banner near the bottom of the circle. The words "BUILT IN 1851" is also shown.  This was one of the American clipper ships built especially for the tea trade between China and England. The following historical information about the ship is printed on the reverse side:   WITCH OF THE WAVE BUILT BY GEORGE RAYNES, PORTSMOUTH , 1851, FOR CAPTAIN JOHN BERTRAM ET AL, SALEM. CAPTAINS, MILLET, TAY, MILLER. LENGTH 220, BREADTH 40, DEPTH 21, TONNAGE 1498, MAIN YARD 81 CALCUTTA-BOSTON 81 DAYS CANTON-DEAL 90 DAYS BEST REPORTED DAY'S RUN 338 MILES. SOLD UNDER DUTCH FLAG, ABOUT 1856   There is a spot of glue and remnants of a hanging strip on the bottom of the plate which I believe can be removed. There is a tiny black dimple in the glaze on the face at approximately seven o'clock 3/8 inch from the rim and a barely visible dot at two o'clock the same distance from the rim.   This is a bright and beautiful plate in excellent condition.. It had obviously been hung for display.  It is sold as is.   **************THIS ITEM WILL BE MAILED AFTER 8-3-08
