Description

Pacific “Primitive Art” - Papua New Guinea - Wooden SculptureDownsizing a personal collection! It is now time to downsize our home, and pass on to others the opportunity to own some of the pieces from my Papua New Guinea anthropological collection, which I have collected over the years.  These examples are not tourist items, but have been actually used by the peoples who created them!  I have always insisted on the procurement of only cultural pieces which are made for native personal use, and show such patination!Up for bidding here is an interesting ancestor spirit plaque, which was carved by the Iatmul people, from the area of the Middle Sepik River, Papua New Guinea.  This piece is an image of a clan ancestor covered with clan designs, and has Cowrie shell eyes.  These spirit pieces are made to hang in the men’s ceremonial house.   This item was collected in the field in the 1980s.  Dimensions: 12.25" x 7" x 1.5". Good luck on your bidding!
