An original and authentic Panama San Blas Kuna Indian Mola is a handsewn decorative multi-layered, multi-colored panel stiched on to the front and back of a blouse traditionally worn by the Kuna women of the San Blas Islands in Panama. Molas are traditionally hand stitched using from two to seven layers of different colored cotton fabric using applique technique. Each layer is intricately cut away, tucked and sewn neatly under, revealing different colors and designs beneath and the stitches are nearly hidden. Mola designs are created by the Kuna women and are often inspired by modern graphics, labels, pictures from publications and TV characters, as well as traditional themes from Kuna legends and culture. Geometric designs are the most traditional molas and are developed from ancient body painting designs. Some molas depict expressions and objects of everyday life, including jungle animals, aquatic creatures, birds, and flowers. No two molas are ever alike and each is unique and inspired by the Kuna women interpretation of the exotic and mystical symbols. Many hours of careful sewing are required to create a fine mola. The ability to make an outstanding mola is a source of status among the San Blas Kuna women. For more detailed information on the San Blas Kuna Indian Molas, click here (Panama Mola Info).
